7 Things I Do Before Teaching

So, basically before teaching every teacher have to make a lesson plan based on the material, the students, the availability of the equipment, the time duration, until the learning objectives based on curriculum.

But for pre-service teacher like SEA-Teacher participant, there are few things we have to do before teaching. I will make a list of it.

  1. Curriculum Research
So, first of all we have to identify which curriculum the practicum school used. UTSS use curriculum from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Japan. MEXT has established Courses of Study that serve as the fundamental standards for curriculums from kindergarten to high school levels. You can find the website here.
  2. Students Characteristic Research
I did class observation several times before the practicum. I identified the student characteristic from that observation. We can use that research to determine which learning method we can use for the practicum.
  3. Cooperating Teacher Guidance Session
I've got a lot of help from my cooperating teacher during the teaching practice in UTSS. He gave me feedbacks about my plan for the practicum and guide me to improve my teaching methods.
  4. Lesson Planning
Lesson planning is essential part of teaching. I have to adjust the structure of lesson plan of host-school. In lesson plan, I mention about the learning objectives, learning methods, learning materials and media, also the duration of each session.
  5. Developing the Teaching Material
I used student worksheet and powerpoint presentation as my teaching materials. I made them and asked my cooperating teacher to give feedback about my teaching materials.

  6. Optimization
Since I used experiment as my learning method, I have to prepare the experiment equipments before the practicum. Almost everyday I spent my time in the laboratorium to optimize the experiment.
  7. Simulation!
Simulation helped me a lot to improve my teaching skills. My cooperating teacher and some students from other class help me with this simulation.
